Scholarship application deadlines are November 1 for spring and summer programs and March 1 for summer, fall and academic-year programs. Upon their return to the U.S., each scholarship recipient must provide a report, to be shared with the Petersons, describing the specific study abroad experience and how it benefitted the student both personally and professionally. Students who will spend a semester or more abroad are especially encouraged to apply. Strong consideration will be given to students participating in ISU-sponsored programs. Preference will be given to students whose primary major is in LAS. Applicants must have: sophomore standing (minimum) with a declared major in the college and a cumulative GPA of 2.5. EligibilityĪny student majoring in an academic program within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is eligible to apply for this scholarship in support of a study abroad experience. Through the creation of this scholarship program, both Trudy and Gary are actively supporting the college’s efforts to increase student participation in international learning opportunities.Įight to ten Trudy Huskamp and Gary Peterson Study Abroad Scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded each academic year to students majoring in a program within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Most recently, Trudy was a consultant in Guatemala, working with government police records. She was an advisor for the records of The Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa and was the founding executive director of the Open Society Archives in Budapest, where she led efforts to preserve and make available archives from the countries of the former Soviet bloc. Trudy also held the position of Director of Archives and Records Management for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Archivist for more than two years (1993-1995) in the Clinton Administration. Trudy is a leading figure in international efforts to preserve records of governmental truth commissions and international criminal tribunals. Trudy Huskamp Peterson is a 1967 Iowa State graduate (English, history, speech communications) and 2008 ISU Distinguished Alumni Award recipient who understands the vital importance of an international education for today’s students. This study abroad scholarship program was established by Trudy Huskamp and Gary Peterson to provide assistance to Liberal Arts and Sciences students participating in an international learning experience.
